Marriage Matters

Newylweds Rasheeda and Cory on vacation in St. Thomas earlier this year.

What a treat I have for you guys today! When I discovered that Tie the Knot Tuesday alum Rasheeda enjoys writing and realized that her one-year wedding anniversary was approaching, I asked the Georgia Peach to pen a piece about her first 365 days of wifedom for Triple B. Rasheeda in turn submitted a beautiful, honest and eye-opening letter to her engaged self. There are so many jewels in this letter, y’all. Enjoy!

Marriage Matters in Harlem!

Happy Monday! If you frequent BlackBridalBliss.com chances are you’re already over the doom and gloom conversations regarding Black marriage. So, how about checking out a panel discussion that does just the opposite with authors, bloggers and journalists that want to celebrate and enlighten you on Black marriages for a change? If you’re able to make it to Harlem USA this evening, head to Hue-Man Bookstore for a lively conversation led by my homie and relationships editor at ESSENCE magazine Charreah Jackson, veteran writer Miles Marshall Lewis, author Sedequa Johnson, newlywed blogging duo and Triple B alums Starr and Anslem aka The Lover’s Rocque (remember their awesome engagement pics?) and more. Enjoy!

We’re switching things up a little on Triple B today. Instead of the traditional Tie the Knot Tuesday feature, we’re showcasing a sexy Trash the Dress photo session. Now you have another option of something fun to do with your gown after saying “I Do”. Tie the Knot Tuesday alum Rasheeda (and one of my fave featured brides) submitted these pics on behalf of her sister. Sweet, right? Enjoy!

Unfortunately our resident bride-to-be Jene is sick and was unable to write her post this week. Feel better, Jene! Hopefully she’ll be back next week, rested up and ready to take us further along on her wedding planning journey.

In the meantime, please check out the below video trailer that Lamar over at Black and Married with Kids shared with me. It features the soulful R&B duo Kindred discussing the apex of marriage. Very enlightening; especially because I was one of those people who used to think that getting married was the relationship finish line so to speak — hey, I’m being honest. How refreshing is it to see modern Black married couples openly speak on the highs and lows of marriage in a way that isn’t pompous or judgmental?

The complete video is on sale beginning May 1st and promises to include a diverse group of couples to provide transparent and insightful conversation about what it takes to have lasting power in current day marriages. Through infidelity, chronic illness, financial crisis and more these couples explain why and how they are still standing.

Contrary to popular belief, many Black couples choose counseling before they say "I Do".

When Shawn and I decided to take our relationship to the next level I had one condition to marriage and that was pre-marital counseling. There was no doubt in my mind that I loved this man and wanted to be his wife. But I don’t care how many sappy love songs you play, it is not true that “Love Is All We Need”.  In a successful relationship you also need patience, communication and understanding. He and I are both of a certain age (in my Wendy Williams voice) and along with age comes being settled in your ways and slow to compromise, which can be the death of any relationship. Keasha (RIP) & Chris Draft on their wedding day, Nov. 27, 2011

I read this heartbreaking story on The YBF earlier today and had to share. Former NFL linebacker Chris wed his love Keasha, who was battling lung cancer, in a beautiful ceremony on November 27, 2011. On Tuesday — just one month after they tied the knot — Keasha lost her battle with cancer. The couple’s touching wedding trailer is below. It is unfortunate that stories about stand-up men like Chris are overshadowed by trash reality television and other nonsense.

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY TO THE FIRST COUPLE

On this day 19 years ago, the 44th President of the United States of America wed his wife, Michelle Robinson. Years later they’re making history in and out of the White House. The pair celebrated their union with dinner at the vegan-friendly Restaurant Eve in Alexandria, VA last night. Congrats and many blessings to the couple!

Please join Triple B in wishing the Obamas a happy wedding anniversary and share how the couple’s relationship has inspired you.

You can "rock" your wedding dress like this, too!

You may not have even said “I Do” yet, but chances are you’re already thinking of creative uses for that wedding gown post-reception besides paying for it to sit in storage. You can always go green and repurpose it like my friend Mo did, or you can wear it again for a fab photo shoot. (And of course you could do both depending on timing.) The talented Kesha Lambert posted pics of Philly newlyweds Tuere and Royce on Facebook recently and I couldn’t stop smiling at them! See why:
