Marriage Matters Monday: When Does He Meet the Kids?

On Friday, May 5, I had the pleasure of appearing on The Tom Joyner Morning Show as a special guest of Jacque Reid’s In Her Hour segment. (WOO HOO!) The topic was How Men Can Keep the Women in Their Lives Happy. This lively exchange covered how men in relationships balance their romantic partners along with their mothers, daughters, ex-wives and ex-girlfriends, “work wives”, sisters + more. We actually ran out of time because there was so much to discuss!

Knock, knock: Anslem hangs out with wife Starrene’s belly.

While many dismiss Father’s Day as another lame form of societal pressure to spend money, we like using this time to celebrate something we’re extremely passionate about here: Family. Rather than featuring a gift guide, Black Bridal Bliss convinced first-time father-to-be Anslem Rocque to open up about life since learning he would be a parent. Anslem is no stranger to Triple B, we’ve showcased both his engagement session and wedding. Now, there’s a Lil’ Rocque on the way! Keep reading for an honest take from a real husband on protecting his pregnant wife, leaning on his circle of male friends and keeping the good stuff about his family off social media.   [Read more…]

Marriage Matters Monday: Cousin Mars Presents A Father’s Day (Month) Special

A young Kathryn in daddy's hands

A young Kathryn in daddy’s hands

As a kid, every Wednesday daddy and I had a tradition. We listened to Frank Sinatra and sipped cherry slurpies while cruising down the highway. Windows down and not a care in the world. My father has and will forever be my first love. The role my father played in my life helped to shape me as a wife. [Read more…]

Triple B founder Bridgette with her parents — 1980-something…

I was tempted to make this essay about how my father stressed the importance of family. I’m grateful for it and hope to pass similar family values to my children should I become a mother. Then I considered making the post about how culturally aware I am as a result of my father. The art, literature and even music he exposed me to at an early age was key in making me the woman I am today. I thought about focusing this piece on the way my father treated my mother and the message it sent to me. I knew early on that romantic love did not mean physical or verbal abuse and I have my father to thank for that.

But I decided against them all. Why?

Marriage Matters: What Marriage Means to Me Series

Donald is marrided & lives in Texas

Donald, who resides in Texas, is a married father of two.

Marriage is a contract to some people, a commitment to others and most unfortunately, slavery to a few. For me, it’s two people who love each other coming together for the advancement of their common goals. My wife and I love each other and our common goals are [Read more…]

Marriage Matters Monday – “He Was Made For Me!”

Nicole and Damien Gurganious celebrated 5 years of marriage in August.

Nicole Brewer-Gurganious is a friend of Triple B. She’s a former boss from my days at ESSENCE magazine (she was then fashion director, I was fashion and beauty research editor). A few years later I started covering real weddings for Essence.com and featured Nicole’s August 2009 nuptials to hubby Damien. The vibrant couple had been contestants on Biggest Loser and both shed an impressive amount of weight while making significant lifestyle changes. It was a delight to showcase Nicole’s big day on Essence.com and Nicole was equally as excited to share her love story. Nicole has confessed, “He was made especially for me” when asked about her marriage. Fast forward to the launch of BlackBridalBliss.com in 2010 — Nicole was an ambassador for David’s Bridal and lent her style expertise to Triple B when the blog was just a month old. She cheerfully expressed how proud she was of me and the leap of faith I took to start this blog. Her advice on how brides of any shape or size can find a fashionable gown is still relevant. Two years ago, Nicole and Damien became the proud parents of a beautiful daughter named Giselle who was the light of both of their lives.

Now Nicole is a widow. [Read more…]

Final Friday with Cousin Mars – Do Men Get the Baby Itch?

Triple B's resident male blogger Cousin Mars gives his three cents on the male baby itch.

So you’re wondering if men get the baby itch? Of course men get The Baby Itch. Why wouldn’t we? The biggest difference relates to when and why our itch arrives. It APPEARS (whether true, or not) to many men that a large percentage of women place having a child on their life’s To Do List. It actually seems as though having a child is part of a hopeful accomplishment list for many women. Conversely, men often attempt to check off all items on the hopeful accomplishment list prior to procreating. [Read more…]
