Lisa Logan and Ashanti show off their Minx manicures.

What do Beyonce, Mary J. Blige and Queen Latifah have in common? Besides being real bosses, they all get their digits pampered by manicurist Lisa Logan.  (She actually did both Beyonce and hubby Jay-Z’s nails for their hush-hush 2008 nuptials!) The New York City based beauty vet graciously took time from her busy schedule to chat with Triple B about getting fingers and toes prepped for that walk down the aisle.

Black Bridal Bliss: Many women assume that their only classy option for wedding day nails is a French manicure. Is this true?
Lisa Logan: There are definitely other options. Some women choose to go with a subtle nude likeEssie’s Ballet Slippers
as well. There are also variations on the classic French manicure that can be achieved like an inverted style with unexpected hues. Something else to consider is adding rhinestones or glitter to just one nail per hand, say the ring finger, and keeping everything else basic.

Essie's Ballet Slippers is a popular polish for traditional brides.

BBB: Are there any trends for nails that brides can take advantage of that are not over-the-top?
Logan: Well there are the gel manicures calledShellac from CNDwhich can be applied as a French manicure as well, but they offer clean, solid colors that will last the bride from the wedding through her honeymoon. Another option for the same look is from Gelish by Harmony; they have more color options. Minx is even developing custom designed options that can match the actual lace or beading of a bride’s gown.

BBB: So you also work with men on their wedding day?
Logan: Absolutely. I think the groom should show up manicured as well with a nice buff shine. I have worked with lots of grooms. Just a nice shape and a hint of shine – nothing over-the-top is perfect for guys.

BBB: What about wedding day pedicures?
Logan: Since most brides are wearing floor length gowns, I think they can have a little more fun with their toes and go for a red or fuschia; especially if their nails are safe and low-key. A Minx pedicure [in a metallic gold or platinum] can be a sexy option as well.

BBB: What is a common mistake many brides make when it comes to their nails?
Logan: When women wait until the day before or day of their wedding to run into any random nail shop to get a manicure, they’re taking a huge risk. It is best to develop a regimen with your technician weeks before to get your cuticles trimmed and nails shaped regularly. Remember, you’re probably going to be taking lots of pictures and your hands will constantly be on display.
