I found the above message on Instagram a couple weeks back and thought it was profound. So much so that I needed to share. It is easy (too easy) to get caught up in the rings, the gown, the flowers, the reception music, and the 18,000 other things that even the most focused engaged couple can forget the true point of it all.
Read. Digest. Comment. (Even if you disagree.)
As a woman with a dark chocolate complexion, I’ll forever be grateful to my parents for instilling a positive self-image in me from an early age. As an adult I realize what they managed to do was no easy feat. I still have a few issues with my image — but thankfully my complexion (or hair texture/length) has never been among them. Yet, the reality is the rest of the world — and especially the fashion and beauty industries — is for the most part obsessed with light skin. So although you’ll never catch me trying to bleach mine, it is annoying to say the least when searching for bandaids, hosiery, lingerie, etc. to match my ebony tone. In fact, the rare times I do find a bra/panty set in my shade that is actually cute, I literally get excited. How cool it would be to have a go-to resource for brown women that offered affordable and stylish undergarments in a range of brown hues, right?
Enter Nubian Skin.
I recently read an article over on Black & Married with Kids written by Franchesca Warren titled, Can a Single Woman Do Too Much Before Marriage?. The piece was penned two years ago but the topics it addresses are still very relevant today. Warren explained that she became a homeowner at 23 — among having various other admirable accomplishments — and was happy to have married a man who viewed her ambition as a good thing. Yet, she points out how others maintain mantras like, “A woman should wait to purchase “big” things (dream car, house, etc.) until she’s married. If they don’t wait, then it’s intimidating to a potential mate.” [Read more...]
When I was a freshman in college, I got my first (and only) tattoo. My older cousin took me to get it and thankfully provided some guidance. She ensured the location was clean, licensed and that I didn’t get some teenage boyfriend’s name permanently stenciled on my body. I went with an ankh on my upper right thigh and nearly 20 years later I have no regrets.
But, every now and then a gal wants to mix things up — and not necessarily with permanent ink — with no guilt or worry. So when my friend Pam introduced me to Flash Tattoos, I was excited. These metallic henna-inspired temporary tattoos are so hot! [Read more...]
In last week’s Bridal News You Can Use, editorial assistant Janee included a mention of the engaged Florida couple Courtney McKenzie, 27 and Jamil Newell, 34 who are seeking corporate sponsorship for their December 2014 wedding. That’s right: This enterprising couple is soliciting donations from big brands to fund their destination nuptials/honeymoon in Thailand — to the tune of $30,000 — and they’re quite proud of it. Courtney and Jamil are even willing to wear company logos for their strut down the aisle. The story seemingly got lost in the aforementioned post (or maybe you guys were already BBQ-hopping for Labor Day Weekend) but this duo is getting way too much buzz elsewhere in the webosphere for Triple B to ignore so… [Read more...]
One of the most anticipated weddings of the year finally happened — actress Gabrielle Union and basketball all-star Dwyane Wade got hitched on Saturday, August 30. The dynamic duo wed in their home city of Miami at the Chateau Artisan castle in a black-and-white themed affair. The bride’s BFF Essence Atkins served as the couple’s officiant. The newlyweds were adamant about not having a traditional wedding party, however, celeb buddies such as Carmelo and LaLa Anthony, Chris and Jada Paul and Kevin Hart were in attendance. [Read more...]
The last stint of Triple B’s USVINice Tour was St. Croix. While I had a great time in St. Thomas and St. John, I enjoyed my visit to St. Croix most. The people were friendly, my accommodations top-notch, the island is postcard-worthy gorgeous and there’s something for everyone to do — from families with small children, girlfriends seeking a fun get-a-way, fellas searching for bonding time or couples looking for a romantic retreat. These are my most memorable parts of St. Croix:
