After selecting your wedding gown, and shoes, and veil (whew!), ensuring you have the proper undergarments is often next on the style to-do list for planning brides. While I was a fashion editorial assistant at ESSENCE magazine 10+ years ago, my then boss constantly preached the value of well made underpinnings. It was often my responsibility to ensure these items were packed in the photo shoot trunks for models. Yes, even models wear slimmers, Spanx and such. They have the ability to instantly suck and tuck in ways most wouldn’t think were possible without surgery. So, why wouldn’t a bride invest in these items for her wedding day?
In my younger years, I associated control top and slimming anything with girdles which were pretty much the most unattractive garments imaginable. Boy have times changed! Check out these items that you’ll not only turn to long after your wedding day but that you’ll still feel ultra-sexy in on your wedding night. Well, before changing into one of those really hot numbers you were gifted with at your bridal shower.
Cass Shapewear: Invisibellas Contour Shaping Thong, $38 – Who wants to worry about visible pantylines on their wedding day? That’s one less thing the photographer has to photoshop out of pictures…
Flexees by Maidenform Ultimate Slimmer Waistnipper, $40 – Because most women over 30 appreciate anything that will cinch their midsection yet still allow them to be comfortable. Period. (Bride or not.)
Satin & Lace Torsolette, $59 (above) – If possible, request that your bridal salon sew a bra and even a corset into your gown. It is actually a common practice. If that isn’t an option however, this torsolette should do the trick.
Silhouettes Open Bust Full Slip, $84-$88 – Leave it to Spanx to create a slip that keeps everything tight and right yet still allows wearer freedom to cut a rug for The Wobble! Available up to size 3X.
BONUS: Does your dress lend itself to more ample cleavage then you presently have? Miss Opps Breast Enhancers aka chicken cutlets will do the trick!
Triple B is in no way suggesting any of the above items replace eating right and developing a regular fitness regimen, but they can get you one step closer to achieving the wedding day silhouette you desire.
Perfect timing BBB! I need to pick up my wedding undergarments this weekend. I’m gonna check out that slimming waist nipper. Thanks
I no longer have the energy to ‘suck it in’ when I’m jazzed up so, I have joined team Spanx, even for basic outings like worship service. It’s not about looking ‘smaller’ but rather smoother. Teamed up with proper fitness activity & eating, they make a difference. I hope our younger sisters pay attention to this post and STOP WEARING ILL-FITTING UNDERGARMENTS! A proper bra can make a ton of difference in how your clothes fit as well as where you breasts later sit. The support ligaments stretch with ‘bounce’ and you will regret not investing in good support and hand-washing it nightly [my physician side had to add that last part].
@Anon – You’re very welcome!
@Ronda – YES, YES and YES! Apparently an overwhelming majority of women in the U.S. are wearing the wrong size bra. I was guilty of this until a couple of years ago. And ill-fitting undergarments are often the difference between the exact same outfit appearing classy or trashy. As always, thanks for commenting! I hope your planning is going well.
I like this post. I recently got fitted for a new bra and come to find out I had been wearing the wrong size for years! The new bra I was purchased was on the high side price wise however, gave my a totally different look and people actually thought my boobs were shrinking!
Danielle: I feel you on the initial sticker-shock. But it’s really an investment. If you treat them well, they will last. We often spend a lot of $ on shoes which women notice more often than hetero-men do while neglecting our ‘foundation garments’ which are, as Bridgette says above, so often the lynchpin in how your outfit ends up looking on you. I’m glad you found a good fit and hope that women everywhere will save then invest rather than grabbing the cheapest thing that kinda maybe fits the girls. I’ve never regretted any of my ‘good’ bras.
