She told us back on Control that she had her own life and was going to make her own decisions. Well Janet Jackson has stayed true to those lyrics. News broke today that the R&B singer and screen gem wed her beau Qatari businessman, Wissam Al Mana. Cool, right? But get this — the couple has been married since last year!
This is a third marriage for Jackson, 46, who was previously wed to James DeBarge and René Elizondo, Jr. (Her marriage to Elizondo was initially kept a secret also.) According to ETOnline, the lovebirds released a statement saying, “The rumours regarding an extravagant wedding are simply not true. Last year we were married in a quiet, private and beautiful ceremony. We would appreciate that our privacy is respected and that we are allowed this time for celebration and joy,” the two said in their statement, signing off, With love, Wissam and Janet”
Well alrightly then. Good for them! I’m always impressed with couples who have their day, their way. Congrats to the newlyweds!
Would you consider eloping or have you eloped? Any regrets? Best decision you ever made? Sound off in the comments.

While I would love the intimacy of an elopement, it just would not feel complete without my extended family. Also, I would catch a straight up beat-down from all of the grannies, aunties and cousins who had a part in raising me (especially the ones who aren’t actually relatives!).
Fortunately, I’m not JJ and don’t think there will be papparazzi at my wedding. She made a good choice for herself. We should each do the same…but remember that choices can have consequences if you elope so be emotionally prepared so that any backlash won’t steal your joy.
I haven’t done any studies, but I believe the number of people eloping is rising . I would guess it is due to people getting married older and the increased costs associated with hosting a moderate wedding.
@Incog – Ditto to everything in your comment.
@Erica J. – I definitely think the number of people opting for destination weddings is rising and there are studies to back that up for sure.
I hope sister has finally found true love. More important is that she love herself.
@SD – Yes, self-love always comes first.
