In 2013, many nearlywed couples want to serve their wedding guests anything but a traditional wedding cake. (My fiance and I are one of them.) Here are Triple B’s top wedding cake alternatives for the modern bride and groom. A bonus is all these sweet treats will become great conversation starters for your guests.
Doughnuts When I was forced to accompany a friend to Dough in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn because her line sister was visiting from Chicago and had to get a fix while in town, I knew this doughnut thing was serious. No exaggeration, homegirl refused to go back to the Chi without her doughnuts. If you and/or your boo are into doughnuts this way too, why not have them replace a traditional white four tier wedding cake? And then there’s the cronut (croissant + doughnut hybrid) that’s getting a lot of buzz these days but that phenom seems to be fleeting.
Pies Confession: My mother bakes the best sweet potato pie. The best. No really, it is. I initially thought I could convince her to bake pies for all my wedding guests but we had to go another route. I got over it. However if your mom, nana, fave aunty or uncle bakes a bangin’ apple, key lime or heck sweet potato pie (My apologies that it won’t be as good as my mother’s recipe.) and you have a feasible way to incorporate it into your day — go for it!
Cookies, Macaroons and Other Pastries As previously reported here on Triple B, incorporating childhood snack faves are a popular part of wedding receptions these days. Some couples are going as far as nixing the cake completely for their beloved cookies and milk. Macaroons are gaining popularity as well. Plus, the presentation of macaroons can make for awesome pics.
Cupcakes Admittedly this isn’t a new trend and some might even argue that the cupcake craze is steadily on the decline. Still, many brides and grooms are happily opting for cupcakes over a colossal traditional wedding cake. In most cases they are less expensive, too. The flavors at The Cupcake Collection (Strawberry Lemonade, anyone?) seem mmm, mmm good. (And yes they do weddings!)
BONUS: Get the scoop on a fab mini-cake resource, cake pop escort cards (ca-yute!) plus an honest dude’s take on groom’s cakes.

yummy!
I love the creativity but, for me, it’s not a reception without a nice piece of white cake with buttercream icing. I know many may call me boring but, at my wedding, you’re getting cake because that’s what I like to eat. Every couple should employ the same logic and express themselves however they see fit :-). At least most of these alternatives above do NOT lend themselves to being rudely smooshed into the bride’s face for a cheap laugh.
@Ronda – “Every couple should express themselves however they see fit.” <--- Pretty much. And I echo your sentiments about the cake smooshing in the face thing...It never made sense to me.
It’s just not a wedding without a real cake. I can’t go for a stack of doughnuts. That’s like an office party.
LOL @ Michael! Funny, I think it’s just not a wedding without real love. Kanye shrug. Different strokes for different folks. I enjoy the varying point of views. Thanks for stopping by Triple B and commenting.
These are fun looking great alternatives but I would not use them for my wedding. I would consider them for a Bridal Shower or any other kind of fun, whimsical kind of social gathering
Thanks for commenting, Carla. One more vote against pies, doughnuts and macaroons, huh? LOL!
