Hey, Triple B! Your favorite cousin is back. As I explained last week, in addition to my Final Friday musings on serious topics like marriage, brotherhood and parenting, I will post here
each and every Thursday about…Fashion. My lil’ cuz Venus and I will alternate each week between looks for the ladies and the fellas to wear not only on the wedding day but to all of those events leading up to the nuptials as well. Today, we’re breaking down what we like — and loathe — about this look recently worn by one of my favorite actresses (big eyes and all), Tracee Ellis Ross.
Mars thinks – This dress can be worn well by women with various body types. I initially thought the Duro Olowu dress was too busy, but quickly changed my mind. Those “Get ’em Girl” pumps complete the look. I’ll admit that I selfishly prefer Tracee wearing (ahem) fitted attire, however she pulls this bridal shower look off rather well.
Venus thinks – Although people often associate multi-print dresses with rag dolls, Tracee is far from that. I, actually, am a big fan of multi-print dresses. The color pallet in this dress makes it much easier to accessorize. Although I’m not too crazy about the high-low cut of this frock (personally they do nothing for me) the big hair and pink Louboutins go perfect! This is a great bridal shower look for a guest or even the bride herself.
Remember, each Thursday Mars vs. Venus will critique a new look. Please share your thoughts of this week’s outfit in the comment section. Also, let Venus and I know what you would add or subtract if you or your significant other rocked this colorful ensemble. Next week’s ensemble will be a groom’s option for an engagement session photo shoot.

Tracee’s style is always on point. She rocks vintage so well (but when Diana Ross is your mama you have access to some pretty sick stuff) and finds creative ways to inject something modern into the look as well. Although this Duro Olowu dress isn’t vintage it reads as such yet the fuchsia pumps remind you that it’s 2014. As Janee pointed out, the “hi-lo” hem isn’t a fave of mine either, but Tracee pulls it off here. Lastly, this look is a great example of what I like to call “quiet sexy”. The dress isn’t super tight, short or lowcut but the accentuated waist and heel scream femininity.
This is fun — I’m already looking forward to next Thursday! LOL! Go Team Triple B!
Although Tracee looks fine in this outfit, I find it too busy for sure. I also think it could only work for those maybe size 8 or below. Thankfully, the hair, lip color and shoes balance the body activity. God forbid any jewelry be added. If anyone of a darker complexion wore this outfit the contrast would be overwhelming, in my opinion.
@SD – LOL, I have a dark complexion and love wearing bright colors and bold prints. I happen to get lots of compliments when I wear them too. Shrugs. While I don’t think size is a factor in who this style silhouette will flatter most, proportion I think is. Someone with a boxy shape (even a size 4) probably wouldn’t look as stylish in this dress. Keep the comments coming! We will not always agree and that’s what will make this feature interesting.
Interesting look. Very different. Could someone get away with wearing this in the winter time though? Seems summery and quilt-like.
I don’t really like this look, but I’m pretty much a blue / black / gray kind of girl. Colorful clothes never look right on me.
Thank you for the comments.
@John – Probably not during a north eastern winter, but this could work in the majority of the rest of the country…I think.
Tracee look stunning in this dress but not many folks could pull it off. It looks like something that could be used in the circus for the clowns.
I think Tracee enjoys having a unique style. Personally, other than television shows I don’t remember her wearing anything that I would ever purchase. However, she always looks fab.
