My mother taught me that self-love was the best love to have. Throughout my childhood my mother would proclaim “I am the Queen of my Castle, and the King of my Domain!” And although I would mostly laugh at her when she said these things, I realize today just how powerful that statement was for her and our family. My mother was empowered by that daily affirmation of self-love, and this propelled her through the most difficult challenges. Every day she fought to love herself so she could be the best mother for her children; shielding us from the pain of insecurities and showing us how to truly embrace our being because we are strong and beautiful Black women.

Today, I am able to love with my whole heart because I love myself first; and my “mommy” taught me that!
