Black Bridal Bliss: What was your inspiration for opening Soliloquy?
Miriam Liggett: After 23 years in corporate America, the last 15 as a senior level executive, I decided it was time to use my skills and talents for a more personal venture. I have always had a secret crush on bridal, sneaking in magazines so my husband wouldn’t be alarmed. It is obvious that when you start a business, you should be passionate about it. I’m passionate about giving brides a personalized shopping experience and unique options.
BBB: Who are your top-selling designers?
Liggett: Since we are still new, it’s too premature to name a top-selling designer. However, we are proud to carry Los Angeles designer to the stars, Kevan Hall who launched his bridal line two years ago and we are proud to be the exclusive carrier of his collection in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. Sarah Seven has a strong following of brides because her ethereal gowns are perfect for a vintage theme or garden wedding. We are also thrilled to be the exclusive Metro D.C. carrier of the re-launched Voci bridal line. Additionally, we are introducing other designers like Maria Karin, Johnna Ho, Sareh Nouri of New York, Project Runway alum, Heidi Elnora, and Francesca Miranda. What I believe is groundbreaking is that we have four African-American designers under one roof: Kevan Hall, Bryan K. Osburn (Chicago), Therez Fleetwood (Atlanta), and Cassandra Bromfield (Brooklyn).
BBB: Do you carry plus-sizes? Petite sizes?
Liggett: Our sample sizes currently range from size 8 to 16, but we can get a dress in any size based on a bride’s measurements. I am sensitive to needs and desires of plus size or petite brides and will be adding sample dresses of all sizes.
BBB: Have you serviced clients who don’t reside in the DMV area?
Liggett: Yes, we have had inquiries and visits from brides who reside as far away as Hawaii. We also have Facebook fans from other countries. It is exciting to see that our designers are resonating with brides everywhere.
BBB: In addition to gowns, what accessories do you offer in the boutique?
Liggett: We offer veils, headpieces, fascinators, sashes, jewelry, university-licensed garters, customized wine and champagne, and select undergarments. We have dresses for bridesmaids, flower girls, and mothers of the occasion.
BBB: What are your starting price points for gowns? Veils?
Liggett: Our starting price point for gowns is $1500 up to $10,000+. For veils, we range from $150 to $800.
BBB: What makes the Soliloquy shopping experience different from those at other bridal salons?
Liggett: We exhibit patience with our brides and an understanding that selecting a wedding gown is not an easy decision. There are many influences and a great deal of emotion involved. The other differences are these Signature Services:
- Skype appointments – We can include a relative or loved-one who cannot physically join the bride on-site during the appointment. This is getting rave reviews from our brides.
- Hush-Hush Appointments – We will arrange secure and private appointments for high profile clients. We would open the shop at 2AM if requested. Fees apply to provide security and staff.
- Themed Bridal Parties – Brides can choose a champagne, Southern or Sweets themed party for their bridesmaids and other friends and family and have exclusive use of the boutique. Fees vary depending on the size of the group
- Bridal Forums -Free monthly workshops/discussions for brides-only.
